University Union Renovation and Expansion

University of North Texas

This project included the renovation and expansion of the existing University of North Texas Union. Renovation consisted of a partial demolition of the structure and full abatement of approximately 180,000 SF. The expansion included new dining and retail spaces, a new theater/academic space, an accessible rooftop green space and a new ballroom. A key architectural goal was to bring large amounts of natural light into the building, which was achieved by demolishing a large section of the existing building to create a multi-story solarium space that serves as the building’s main circulation area. The clerestory at the top of the solarium filters natural light from the roof level down to all other levels. The existing structure presented many structural challenges — from the incorporation of a new building skin to incorporating new loads associated with dining food preparation and vertical expansion. Site improvements included rerouting utilities servicing the adjacent Eagle Student Service Center, modification of Union Circle and modifications to a parking area.
