Thelma Richardson Elementary School

Dallas ISD

Deep in the heart of southeastern Dallas, the new Thelma Richardson Elementary School relieves an underserved established community. As part of the 2008 Bond Program, the new elementary school was designed in conjunction with the Collaborative for High Performance School requirements. The two-story facility houses more than 800 students from pre-K through fifth grade, and contains a total of eight pre-K and kindergarten classrooms, one multi-grade classroom and four special education classrooms. It features a welcoming yet protected courtyard entrance with a covered entry. The larger-scaled public spaces are connected to a vertical  light-filled lobby that links the classrooms, media center, and performance and administration areas. The project also included a gymnasium, a cafeteria, a multipurpose meeting room and an auditorium. JQ provided civil and structural engineering services.
