Hopkins County Safety Rest Stop

Texas Department of Transportation

Located in East Texas, this Texas Department of Transportation rest stop is designed to reflect the surrounding environment, with an emphasis on trees. The Visitor Centers contain large open-display areas with exposed steel trusses and wood ceilings, and the exposed trusses are supported on columns with four tubular columns resembling tree trunks. The roof trusses at the perimeter of the display room resemble multi-branched tree canopies, and the exterior canopy over the main entrance walk also contains exposed steel trusses configured to resemble trees. In addition to the main display area, the Visitor Centers contain FEMA-rated tornado shelters, office spaces and restroom facilities. The sites, located on each side of Interstate Highway 30, also feature independent restroom buildings, children’s playground structures, and individual and family picnic arbors. The structural steel framing systems of all buildings in the facility are an integral part of the architectural design and expression, as well as of the building’s structural support.
