Houston Medical District Northeast Campus Distribution Extension

Thermal Energy Corporation (TECO)

This project extends TECO’s energy services to Ben Taub Hospital, allowing the hospital to decommission its old, inefficient boilers and chillers. TECO provides electricity, chilled water and steam to a majority of buildings in the Houston hospital district. The project included the design and construction of a 475-foot hand-dug wooden box tunnel under a parking lot that had to remain in service, as well as a 26-by-29-by-22-foot-high bore pit and a 30-by-31-by-25-foot-high receiving pit adjacent to an existing valve vault. During design of the receiving pit, it was decided to leave the steel framing in place for use in future excavations for piping maintenance. This required coordination with other disciplines to include the framing with the cathodic protection system used for the overall project.
