Description:
The Guadalupe Street Improvements project was located between 21st and
24th Streets bordering the west side of the University of Texas at Austin
campus.
Otherwise known as
the Drag, this street serves pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and
large volumes of daily commuter traffic. The goal of this project was
to enhance
Guadalupe Street’s function as a pedestrian corridor, making it
as safe and easy to cross as possible. To achieve this goal, the sidewalk
on the east side of Guadalupe
Street was widened to allow for more of a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.
The water line as well as the storm sewer lines were upgraded as part
of the Guadalupe
Street Improvements. The previous water line was located under the sidewalk
and due to its condition and location, it was relocated to the inside,
southbound
lane. The storm sewer lines located in the intersections were replaced and
new 10-foot curb inlets were added to comply with city of Austin
standards. The
new tree wells along the east side of the street added pervious cover to
the site, and, in turn, decreased the amount of runoff.
